Who are (or is) A Taste of Ra? Their debut CD contains no information whatsoever as to who is responsible for this album, when it was recorded — nothing. The three-fold jacket contains only a track list, the lyrics, and an obscure presentation in guise of cover artwork. And the music has nothing to do with Sun Ra’s, in case you were tempted to seek answers in that direction. A Taste of Ra (the album) consists of 11 songs and instrumentals in the post-folk vein with an abundance of acoustic instruments (including recorders and harmonium), ethereal singing, pastoral melodies, and ambient sound-capture. Judging from the instrumentation (especially the harmonium) and the songwriting, one may suspect some form of involvement from Tape’s Andreas and Johan Berthling, but that is only speculation. Nevertheless, fans of Tape should feel at home with this album, despite the lack of electronics. And people interested in the American post-folk scene, from Christian Kiefer to Dredd Foole and the Skygreen Leopards, should definitely lend an ear. A Taste of Ra trade in the disquiet permeating the music of the American scene for the pastoral feel of Scandinavian folk (see Häpna’s roster for further examples). The singer’s bluesy inflections also bring more feeling to the music than one would expect, making this short CD instantly likeable. Further listens unroll its quiet details. An unexpected, mysterious treasure.
