It was as early as the year 2000 when a Mr Richter asked me if I would be interested in receiving one of Oliver Wittchow’s early versions of the, by now, world famous Nanoloop Gameboy synthesizer/sequencer cartridges. The reason being to produce a track for the compilation CD: NANOLOOP 1.0 .. featuring, apart from myself ( under the Stock, Hausen & Walkman disguise ) such luminaries as Felix Kubin, Scratch Pet Land, DAT politics, Merzbow, Pyrolator and Oliver Wittchow himself. By the end of 2001 my enthusiasm for this portable miracle had me performing live at regular intervals using ONLY 2 old school gameboy DMG’s ( sometimes 3 ) through an assortment of guitar fx pedals. Such was the mandatory grip of the “hide behind a laptop on a table” school of ‘live’ electronic music at the time one Utrecht journalist described my presence standing ‘boldly’ at the front of the stage churning out such noise as ‘confrontational’?? which totally threw me.. had things really got so bad that standing up on stage like some kind of Cyber John Otway was considered confrontational in electronic music?? surely not.
As Marc Richter renamed his label from the Disco Bruit moniker that the Nanoloop CD had been released on, to his, now, quite prolific Dekorder label. I was happy to be amongst the first, along with The Hafler Trio, to contribute the establishing releases in the form of the stylish 10 inch vinyl release PUBLIC.EXE
PUBLIC.EXE PLUS is an augmented release, now in it’s rightful home amongst all the other Hot Air paraphernalia.
The original 28 minutes of audio from the vinyl is here remastered for digi-land at Dicky’s Skull, Eccles and boosted with a full 44 frightening minutes of extra material. Firstly an unedited 32 minute set from Istanbul where I had the pleasure to perform on a double bill with Merzbow. This set sees me really getting to grips with juggling the 3 gameboy/fx set up and is arguably the most hypnotic of the material. It occurred, annoyingly, only a month or so after the release of the 10 inch otherwise, as I told Marc, it would probably have ousted the original material on the vinyl so rare is it for me to be satisfied with a live recording enough to leave it unedited! The other extra, quite extreme, 12 minutes is culled from a performance in Köln on the same bill with both Z’ev and an old friend V/vm in his pre Caretaker days.
Be advised that the high frequency content on these live recordings can sometimes be quite … err… punishing and listening on low quality ‘airpods’ or such is not recommended or endorsed.
All Tracks are improvised and performed live with no overdubs. The 2 (or 3) Gameboys are run at the same tempo but are not synced in any conventional sense adding a certain ‘Reichian’ rhythmic phasing to the sometimes oddly free jazz like noise.
