“Without question, saxophonist Luc Houtkamp is developing into an underground legend. His bracing, original, and frenetic style deserves a wide audience. So, any recording on which he appears is to be savored. Here, the saxophonist plays on three stunning cuts, totaling more than 33 minutes. He leads a duo with electronics wizard Richard Barrett, a quintet including new music pianist Fred van Hove and percussionist extraordinaire Gert-Jan Prins, and a sextet featuring the ecstatic trombone of Johannes Bauer. Unfortunately, as is often the case with a compilation of this sort, the other tracks (constituting most of this CD) are often less interesting. Additionally, the five short interludes are meaningless unless you happen to speak Dutch. Still, this is a fine introduction to the playing of Houtkamp and to some of the other artists on this label.”
