“.01: exactly the kind of album title you’d expect from an experimental electronica outfit, especially one delving in the realm of lowercase sound. The Italian trio Tu M’ delivers a good CD — not outstanding but honest enough to draw some attention. When working as a closed unit, Andrea Gabriele, Rossano Polidoro, and Emiliano Romanelli create complex clicks & cuts music, fusing digital glitch sounds with light electronic samples. These pieces (untitled tracks two, three, five, and six) offer interesting soundscapes, minimal in prime materials but not minimalist in essence. On the other hand, by 2001 there was a lot of such music being released and Tu M”s, although good, doesn’t stand out. Things get more interesting with tracks one and four, where the trio is joined by a cast of guests that includes Stephen Vitiello, Jason Kahn, Chris Cutler, and Maurizio Martusciello. Understandably, the music becomes denser and gains amplitude, but it also warms up. Reminiscences of Martusciello’s groups Ossatura and Metaxu can explain this feeling. Tu M”s sense of cinematics finds a natural complement in this collaboration, rewarding the listener with 20 minutes of intense listening. Not to say that the remainder of the CD doesn’t deserve your attention.”
