“The thirteen musicians heard on this new schraum release were invited separately, or in small ensembles to the studio, living room or even a stairwell to record the music of Some Of The Things We Could Be. The musicians are part of the avantgarde and jazz worlds and should be quite familiar to listeners of schraum, for example: Clayton Thomas, who plays with free jazz legend Peter Brötzmann, or Christian Biegai, who is part of the Anthony and the Johnsons ensemble. The musicians didn´t have a clue of how exactly the pieces would be like in the end – there were many overdubs and the process of recording took over eight months.
Torsten Papenheim has worked very closely with Producer Dave Bennett in the past (schraum7 – Sieben mal Solo, and schraum3 – Flowers You Can Eat) and felt that his special blend of technical skills and avantgarde leanings would be beneficial to the realization of the album.
The twelve compositions on Some Of The Things We Could Be play with the contrast and harmonies of melody and noise, effectively creating pieces of avantgarde folk music and noise jazz collages. Torsten Papenheim assembles these interesting differences very thoughtfully into pieces of chamber music, openly arranged jazz tunes, Moscow field recordings and tape deck feedbacks. Somewhat romantic wind sections follow manipulated mini disc tracks and rough banjo patterns interfere with detuned pianos. Certain motives appear time and again, the pieces quoting each other.
The title Some of the Things We Could Be refers to the jazz standard All the things you are, which incidentally, also animated Charles Mingus and Gunter Hampel to a play on words. Torsten Papenheim doesn´t address this sentence to a particular person, but rather points to the colourful pool of impressions, shapes, styles and techniques of the musicians who played on the album.”
