“Instead of a “remix project,” Helene Marie: Reinterpretations could be seen as a “distant collaboration project.” It started with John Hudak’s CD Don’t Worry About Anything: I’ll Talk to You Tomorrow. It was first conceived as an LP. The shift in media prompted the artist to extend one of the planned side-long pieces to CD length and abandon the other. The label Alluvial decided to distribute it to a select group of sound artists. Nine of them (including Hudak himself) composed new works using it as source material. The renowned names of Marc Behrens, Francisco López, Jason Lescalleet, and Leif Elggren are seen next to more obscure artists like Sukora, Peter Duimelinks, Eric Lanzillotta, and Frans De Waard. Electronics and computers allow artists to do virtually anything and reach any point from one source. Nevertheless, the pieces on disc one of this two-CD set stick very close to the original, amounting to a dangerous homogeneity in musical discourse. Hudak’s piece opens the disc. It shimmers on the verge of consciousness, reaching levels of silence and transparency (literally) unheard of. The contributions on disc two take more liberties and include the best pieces. López pulls out his crescendo-and-abrupt-cut trick once again, but he does it so convincingly that one can hardly hold a grudge against him. De Waard produced a slow-shifting piece exploring a number of registers. In a refreshing move, Elggren went against the grain and produced a noise assault of digital static. The packaging is beautiful and luxurious. Helene Marie: Reinterpretations was released in a limited edition of 500 copies.”
