“Perlon, which would change its name to Perlonex in subsequent recordings, is a trio led by Ignaz Schick, devoted to the relatively consonant and nearly melodic end of the electro-improv spectrum. The first of the two long selections, “Terlenka,” begins in very soothing fashion, with guitarist Jorg Maria Zeger strumming figures that would not sound out of place on an Eno album. But the marvelous percussionist Burkhard Beins prods and pushes, offering sizzling splashes of cymbal work and abstract clattering sounds, propelling the trio into more dangerous territory. Throughout, Schick provides an electronic backdrop that is both richly textured and somewhat industrial sounding, with more than a touch of foreboding. In fact, this piece could almost be heard as an extension of Fripp and Eno’s “An Index of Metals.” “Argon” begins with some surprising dub-like echoing notes from Zeger, sustaining a dreamy mood for several minutes before veering into less familiar territory. Things grow increasingly sparse and desolate, the guitar still occasionally bringing in soft reminders of tonality but the overall fabric becoming filled with rattles, shakes, metallic hums, and oddly voice like squiggles. A fine, full aural quality is maintained throughout, always exerting fascination, never flagging for creativity. While the following release, Peripherique, took things to even higher ground, this release showed clearly that Schick and company were musicians to keep an eye on. Recommended for fans of electro-acoustic improvisation in general and also for adventurous rock listeners.”
