“British duo Fort Lauderdale makes melting-pot music in which funk, folk, jazz, hip-hop, electro, orchestrated pop, and soundtrack styles merge into a mysterious, vividly cinematic whole. Faint breakbeats and synth accents ghost the hypnotic piano minimalism of “Orange Coals,” while “I the Man” and “You’ re Too Late For the Truth” are puzzle boxes of dissonant strings, urgently jazzy basslines, horns, furtive electronics, and funky guitar stings. Wiggling synth riffs and chintzy pre-set percussion provide whimsical counterpoint to the mounting back-alley menace.
“Hells Angels'” outstanding arrangement mingles Van Dyke Parks’ sumptuous exotica sentimentality with the unsettling tenor of Michael Nyman’s film scores, while “My Poor Aching Heart” adds hip-hop, John Barry flourishes, and simple, folky chord changes. “Golden Showers” is a tripper’s delight–electronica’s answer to the novelty psychedelia of “Incense & Peppermints.” A dramatic, Tindersticks-like closer (“The Kaleidoscope Man”) stirs in acid-fried guitar licks, spoken word, and organ swirls; this one’s just screaming for a William Shatner reinterpretation”
