Based on the strategic moves of two chess players, Chessmachine places the two composers in a climate of strategic exchange. The image is strong, but also deeply metaphorical. Young representatives of two super powers who established the Cold War whose memory is now mainly conjured up during sporting events or chess matches Richard Chartier and Ivan Pavlov have no present day reason to face off in confrontation. As such, the project was born after the two met at MUTEK 2000, leading to a mutual desire to exchange ideas while respecting their differences and their distances. Based on the game of chess, where for decades the matches progressed via courier correspondence between adversaries separated by great distances, the two composers have, over the last two years, exchanged musical moves with the goal of convincing the other of each moves aptness. Thus, over the course of the exchange process and each action-reaction, the transformations in the principles of composition inherent in each artist are played out; semantic and aesthetic shifts are produced. Up to this point, only one part of the game has been completed and it has materialized into this CD. But the confrontation between the two opponents is yet to be concluded, and will continue to unfold.
