Shame is a nasty feeling that is feared, hidden and protected. Many shames infect us already as children, following us even to the grave. The only way to get rid of the chains of shame is to tell the whole world.
Hanneriina Moisseinen’s book collects a number of shameful true stories from different parts of Finland. The perpetrator has interviewed acquaintances and strangers with a tape recorder, asking them to tell stories related to shame from their own lives. The sets and scores contain a wide range of feelings of shame – embarrassing situations, childhood shame, shame in the sauna and underwater.
Moisseine’s comics make rich reading; Some of the cartoons are drawn, others painted, and some embroidered on canvases. In the hands of a skilled maker, different techniques combine into a whole. Sets and scores are a good thing. It is a liberating work. After all, we should all tell our own shameful story at some point.
Text in Finnish with English translations.
