“Hardback, 160 pages, 12×18 cm, black and white illustrations. Text in German.
Hanswursts Hochzeit is an irreverent adaptation of an equally irreverent text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
The little known play fragment was written in the style of Grobianism, a literary style from the 16th and 17th century whose main feature is the comedic depiction of boorish and rude behaviour, as a means to critique both boorishness as well as hypocrisy.
It mostly consists of two parts: a prologue in which a student and his mentor discuss the former’s coming wedding as well as questions of opportunism and social etiquette, and a long list of wedding guests whose names are generally combinations of swear words.
In this book the first part was adapted as a collaborative comic by various artists and the second part was turned into a long gallery of grotesque portraits inspired by the works of Basil Wolverton. The book ends with a surreal comic finale using various unfinished parts, scene ideas and verse fragments from the original text.
Hanswurst Hochzeit was published for the 5th installment of the Bilderberg Konferenz Berlin underground comix festival and contains drawings by circa 50 artists from all over Europe and other countries.”
