“A peculiar but often fascinating audio excavation by sound archaeologist Pea Hicks (also one half of Optiganally Yours, though he spells his last name Hix there), Lucas and Friends Discover a World of Sound collects audio ephemera from close to 50 years of basements, thrift stores, and private collections. These 38 tracks are taken from recordable phonograph records (like those ones found in booths in old amusement parks), wire recorders, reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes, recorded by unknown people playing with their hobby equipment. Hicks edited these tapes, and, in many cases, adds unobtrusive musical accompaniment to the background before arranging them into a strange collage. Listening to some of these tapes is like an audio form of voyeurism, eavesdropping on moments in the lives of utter strangers. Others are just kind of annoying, as in the five aptly-titled “Jerks” segments, which primarily consist of a pair of bratty kids saying naughty words into their toy cassette player. On the other hand, the featured player, a kid named Lucas who sounds like he’s about eight years old, is really quite charming, singing a variety of songs with unashamed gusto. Silly but intriguing, Lucas and Friends Discover a World of Sound should interest folks interested in the outer fringes of recorded sound.”
