“The title of this work is apart of a sentence from ‘Marriage of Heaven and Hell’ by the English visionary writer William Blake. – “The tigers of wrath are wiser than the horses of instruction”. The music is rhythmic and energetic and was conceived with dance in mind. Reflecting Blake’s philosophical argument, the structure is bipartite; the first part (consisting of three separate sections), the second part proportionally faster and an almost continuous tutti. ‘Horses of Instruction’ was commissioned by Bang on a Can All Stars with finances kindly provided by the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust. Bang on a Can All Stars gave the premiere in August 1994 at the Berkshire Music Centre, Tanglewood, USA.”
