“Minimalism is too weak a word to describe K. Dion Workman and Rohan Thomas produced this collaboration in 1999-2000 while they were both residing in the Netherlands. Both pieces, titled “K1” and “K2,” use minidisc feedback as sound source. “K1” is 22 minutes of a very low and a very high frequency, plus short, sparse glitchy interventions in between. The absence of cycles or repetitions allows for a minimal human touch. “K2” is high frequencies mostly, delicately overlapping. A hum is left alone for the last few minutes, but if you are subject to hearing ringing, you will wonder if the high pitches have disappeared or not. Workman and Thomas push the lowercase aesthetic very far, leaving almost no traces of work in the process. Sine waves can have physical effects on the body when listened to at a high level. There is no interest in listening to K whisper quiet — all you’ll detect are the glitches in the first track and probably nothing at all in the second. Turn up the volume to “feel” this music. And if that kind of experience does not appeal to you, steer clear of this CD.”
